I love one (1) fanboy.

…hey Harry Potter fans, we’re all in agreement that Dumbledore brought the Philosopher’s Stone to Hogwarts in Harry’s first year as a test to see whether Voldemort was paying attention and what sort of state he was in, now that Dumbledore’s chosen champion was old enough to hold a wand, right?

Like, Harry learns what magic is and it’s time to start moving towards the full and final destruction of Tom Riddle Junior, so Dumbledore has a chat with his long-time alchemy friend who’s been keeping this thing safe for literally six centuries straight, and ‘borrows’ the easiest source of immortality he can find as bait for a trap to lure Voldemort out into the open so Dumbledore can get the lay of the land to prep for the next seven years.  This is canon, right?

This post just passed 50,000 notes, which is way more than I expected when I first made it, and can I just say, the tags and notes are full of so much vitriol against Dumbledore.  People loathe him so much.  I don’t think I ever realized how much before this!

I find that so interesting, because god knows Tumblr and fandom and fans at large tend to love tricksy bastards who play chess games in their heads.  Dumbledore’s far from the first old man who sent other people to die for his war.  He’s not the first character who’s manipulated kids, or raised children to be warriors because he believed they had to be.  He’s a long, long way from the first desperately flawed mastermind we’ve seen.  But god, do fans hate Albus Dumbledore.

And I wonder: how much of that is because we feel like Dumbledore betrayed Harry, and how much of it is because we feel like Dumbledore betrayed us?

Most of us were so young when we started reading the Harry Potter books.  The world was magic and Harry’s home was terrible, and a kindly old man with twinkling eyes and a white beard winked, and seemed to know everything in the world, and we thought he’d promised to take care of each and every child given unto his care.  We thought that meant us too.

There’s a thing that happens as kids grow up, when they begin to realize that their parents and the adults around them are flawed and broken and making things up as they go, and sometimes make very real mistakes.  Sometimes as grown-ups we find ways to forgive the adults that raised us for all the good and bad they did, and sometimes we cut them out of our lives forever.  But there’s always that feeling of betrayal, with the realization that a trusted adult did actually cause us harm–and not just because they used their best judgment and tried their best to protect us and it wasn’t enough, but because they decided something else was more important than our well-being and meant it.

As a human and a character, Albus Dumbledore is fascinating, flawed, fallible, with complicated priorities and a chess board for a brain, and he’s motivated by guilt and big-picture thinking and ego and a very real desire to do good for the world in the broadest possible sense all at once.  As an adult that Harry trusted he failed rather badly, but it’s up to Harry to decide how he feels about that, and Harry has plenty of complicated feelings of grief and forgiveness and self-sacrifice of his own.

We trusted Dumbledore to be the Good Adult.  The kindly man who had his students’ best interests at heart.  And he wasn’t.  He wasn’t what he promised us he’d be, and I think that’s what so many readers can’t forgive him for.

10 Years of Marvellous Women Favourite Line: That was for New York. Jane is definitely a character that got the short straw....

Something that I think about a lot, in terms of how hard Loki is on himself, is all of the internal struggle that he maybe takes on that were never meant to be things that contributed to his mental break, but they got tangled up in it anyway.

I mean, we all know that Loki’s struggle has been hidden away for so long. In Thor 1, pre-Jotunheim Loki gives off this demure energy, in that yes, we know he’s mischievous and he’s a warrior and he’s a mage and all of that - but, he’s not quite a presence yet, not a force to be reckoned with. In later movies, Loki walks around with his sass and his antagonism and all of his mercurial energy on display no matter who doesn’t like it - but, before JOtunheim, it was all locked away.

And we know that Loki internalizes blatant jabs at him, such as Volstagg’s silver tongue turned to lead? and similar things, but what about moments that maybe weren’t jabs or mockery against him yet he interpreted them as something to be embarrassed about?

I’m thinking about the pre-coronation scene, and how uncomfortable it all is if you think about the entire thing from Loki’s perspective. Here he is, joking with Thor and trying to connect with him, and all he gets in return is jabs about his magic and overt mockery. He starts out on an uneven playing field. Thor makes his crack about “some do battles, others do tricks,” and the servant laughs.

image

Loki’s expression is so interesting here, because it’s as if he freezes - is this servant, this nobody, openly laughing at a prince of Asgard? - but then he collects himself within a fraction of an instant. He turns the wine to snakes, the servant is appropriately chagrined (but not, notice, punished in any way even though he could have been), and the moment passes.

Except it doesn’t really pass. It’s one of those little micro-aggressions that only fuels into Loki’s rage, simmering beneath the surface. And sometimes I think about how it contributed to how Loki might have felt during that entire exchange with Thor that follows: Loki’s been openly laughed at in front of Thor, Thor doesn’t stick up for him and only calls the incident “a waste of good wine,” and yet even so, Loki is perceptive enough to see that Thor is nervous.

And he decides to reach out. He gives Thor a very genuine, heartfelt, reassuring speech, ending with, “never doubt I love you,” and even though Thor looks touched and happy, he doesn’t return the sentiment. He just says, “Thank you.” As if Loki has done him a favor rather than tried to connect with him.

image

Thor gives Loki his patented neck-grab, yeah, but then he finishes it with a pat, like he’s rewarding Loki for his words. Not returning them. And I feel like that would have been additionally humiliating for Loki, in this kind of subtle way. I don’t feel like Loki expresses open emotion like that easily, and to open himself up to Thor only to have Thor simply acknowledge it as a favor without returning the feelings must have felt like even more embarrassment coiling in Loki’s core. I imagine his skin crawled with discomfort.

I realize I’m not saying anything that hasn’t already been said before, but I think my point is that we focus a lot on how other people have humiliated and mocked Loki in various ways, but I don’t ever see too much about how Loki humiliates himself, in that incidents that other people may brush off are things that, due to his massive inferiority complex, Loki internalizes and hates himself for; things that maybe make him wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night because, oh god, remember that time I told Thor I loved him and he just said thank you?

You know? How many of us have those embarrassing moments that haunt us for years afterwards, things that everyone else has long forgotten about? It makes me wonder how many times it’s happened over the years, that Loki has done something or said something or made some error or whatever, and in reality it likely wasn’t that big of a deal or it wasn’t something anyone else dwelled on (although Thor was too wrapped up in himself to recognize Loki reaching out, I very much doubt he judged Loki for it or thought less of him or anything else; the embarrassment in that moment is in Loki’s mind, only) but, to Loki, it feels like the end of the world?

It’s like he’s dragging a cart full of rocks behind him, and along the way, other people around him toss a few into it - hey, mind carrying this for me, Loki? You’ve got the cart anyway - and he smiles and says sure, sure, no problem, and doesn’t mention how his arms are beginning to hurt or his brow is sweaty. And along the way, every so often, he’ll pick up his own rocks to add to the cart until he’s struggling along, trying to keep moving despite the increasing weight of both his rocks and everyone else’s rocks, and then suddenly he’s focused so much on the cart that he doesn’t see the boulder that flies at him out of nowhere and slams him in the face and knocks him cold. It takes him down. The cart has tipped over and the rocks have spilled everywhere and, instead of trying to pick them up and right the cart, he just screams fuck it, and kicks the cart, and leaves all of the rocks out there, exposed to everyone, scattered in a mess every which way he looks.

He leaves them there, and from then on out, anytime someone says, hey, mind carrying this for me Loki? he sneers and says carry your own fucking rocks, and then whoever asked is insulted, like Loki is just a mean, terrible person. They’ve completely forgotten about all the rocks that spilled before.

And I think that’s pretty apt to describe how everyone thinks Loki is a villain without acknowledging both how hard they’ve been on him and how hard he’s been on himself, forever, without reprieve. It’s like Loki’s been set up to fail in every possible way, including with his own perception about how he’s treated.

The worst part is that I think that even though after Thor 1 and his fall, he’s very outwardly antagonistic and full of sass and all of the wonderful things that make him such a force to be reckoned with, there’s probably always going to be that little voice in his head that judges him for anything he does. That mocks him. There are probably things he still jerks awake from in the middle of the night - god, I can’t believe I even tried to talk to Thor about Odin’s lies - but instead of letting the rocks spill, he just … stifles them. Thor tries to talk to Loki later (in Ragnarok) and Loki doesn’t want to bother.

image

Loki’s still got that cart of rocks, you see. It’s just that now he only carries around his own, fuck everybody else’s. But the weight is still as heavy as ever.

The Great Gatsby enters the public domain in 2021. If at least one of us doesn’t have an unauthorised sequel ready to publish on January 1st at 12:01 sharp, I will be very disappointed.

I’m guessing the folks in the notes going “oh no, there’s not enough time!” fall into one of two groups:

1. People who misread the year and don’t realise I’m talking about a deadline fourteen months from now.

2. People who have an uncommonly realistic notion of the pace of their writing.

I’m #2

Plus I would imagine F. Scott Fitzgerald’s estate will probably renew the copyright.

That’s not how it works. There hasn’t been any such thing as copyright renewal for a long time, and even when copyright renewal was a thing, the effect of renewing was to prevent the relevant rights from expiring early, not to extend them beyond the usual statutory limit. With the exception of audio recordings, works published between 1923 and 1976 cap out at the date of publication plus 95 years – and that span is up for The Great Gatsby on January 1st, 2021.

so i could totally put gatsby into my sherlock and dracula story?

Yes, though you might have to wait a bit longer if you’re inclined to be picky about your timelines; while the bulk of the Sherlock Holmes canon is unencumbered by copyright, the last few short stories that cover the period of Holmes’ retirement – which is where his lifetime lines up with the events of The Great Gatsby – don’t enter the public domain until 2023.

(Holmes would canonically be 68 years old when the summer of 1922 chronicled in The Great Gatsby goes down, for the curious. How precisely he’d be induced to set aside his beekeeping and take a trip to Long Island at that age, I leave as an exercise for the inventive writer!)

The Prince of Egypt - 1998

Whenever Hagrid finally decides to retire as Care of Magical Creatures professor you can bet your last knut that Charlie Weasley flies back to England the following week excitedly waving his resume and recommendation letters from no less than two Scamanders and the Minister of Magic, Hermione Granger.

I’m pretty sure he would also have recommendation letters from Rubeus Hagrid, the retiring professor, Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived and a very confusing one from Puddlemere United player, Oliver Wood, saying that he was one of the best Seekers he had ever seen.

Not to mention the fact that he flies back to England not on a broomstick or any other normal form of transportation, but landing on the Hogwarts grounds on the back of the largest dragon anyone has ever seen.

Reblogging again for that last addition.

Charlie: *glides in on a dragon* HELLO HIRE ME

Everyone: What the fuck

Ron: (in the background, mortified) this is normal

Not just any large dragon, either. A huge Norwegian Ridgeback that immediately curls itself around Hagrid’s Hut once Charlie dismounts. And it purrs when Hagrid dodders out of his hut to see what’s going on.

Norbert sneezes some sparks into Hagrid’s beard for old time sake. Hagrid bursts into joyful sobs. “He remembers his mummy! After all these years!”

Idk I feel like once he’s recovered and allowed himself to open up to other people again, Bucky can be really, really thoughtful. I bet he’s the kind of person who’ll go to the store because he needed a new toothbrush but come home with a toothbrush AND a bag of coffee beans for Clint because he knows he ran out, some charcoal pencils for Steve because he knows he likes to draw, and a pair of socks for Sam ‘cause he lost one of his in the dryer. They wouldn’t even ask him to do any of those things. He’d just do them.

Bucky is some kind of mother hen actually.

Tony walks into the commons and spots Bucky lounging in one of the armchairs with his nose buried in a book, but what really catches his attention is the uncharacteristic appearance of a vase of bright and fresh flowers in the middle of the coffee table.

Bewildered, he speaks. Barnes, are these… peonies?”

Bucky barely looks up from the book he’s been poring over as he turns a page. “Yeah. Just thought they looked nice. They brighten up the room, don’t they?”

Bucky’s also likely to if he sees that someone has fallen asleep on the couch he’ll place a blanket over them.

I’ll raise you one more: He sees them asleep on the couch, picks them up, and puts them in their room, with a glass of water on the nightstand.

Bucky gives special attention to Peter, sneaking snacks and Sticky Notes that say “have a good day, kiddo”, “science rulez”, little sticky note drawings and other positive things into his bag

Peter just finished his weekly report in the conference room and is getting ready to leave the compound when Bucky runs into him.

“Hey, kid. Leaving so soon?”

Peter still doesn’t know how to address him so he just nods.

“Wanna grab a snack first?” Bucky offers with a smile.

They end up making banana splits in the kitchen.

While they’re sitting on the counter enjoying their desserts, Peter clears his throat.

“So, uhm, Sargeant Barnes—”

“Bucky’s fine.”

Bucky, right.” Peter proceeds with caution, “D-did you… Did you really assassinate JFK?”

Bucky looks up from his bowl, amused to receive such a bold question. He and Peter awkwardly blink at each other for a few seconds.

“I’m not gonna answer that.” He deadpans, digging into his bowl again. “Finish your sundae.”

“Yes, sir.”

it keeps getting BETTER

You put some clothes in the dryer but forget to go and get it right away and when you return to your room to grab something, it’s sitting on your bed neatly folded and on top is a note from Bucky
