The city of Bremen, as has been extensively documented, has a pretty rich heritage of modern and postwar architecture that I repeatedly praised for its ingenuity. Through the work of architects like Carsten Schröck, Gerhard Müller-Menckens and Hans Budde the city received a postwar face that oscillated between tradition and decided modernism, emphasizing the former or the latter depending of context and clients’ demands. Hans Budde (1920-2002) for example conceived the highly elegant Kaffeehaus am Emmasee (1963-64) together with his colleague Carsten Schröck, a composition of flat volumes seemingly floating above a lake and one of my favorite buildings in the city. Very recently I also stumbled across the present booklet at an antiquarian bookshop: Hans Budde’s self-written and self-released retrospect from 1990, a very personal re-narration of his life and work dotted with photographs of his most significant works. Budde, who studied architecture at TH Hannover until 1949, in 1951 opened his office in Bremen as a result of a competition win. From then on Budde was busy with all kinds of building typologies: schools, churches, office buildings and even a waste incineration plant. Together with Carsten Schröck and Frei Otto he also entered the Stadthalle competition in 1957, a competition that was ultimately won by Austrian architect Roland Rainer but which gained the three a respectable second prize. In „Erlebtes + Gebautes“ Budde reflects in a very personal and straightforward manner on the heydays of postwar architecture in a city that during the Wirtschaftswunder years blossomed both economically and architecturally. A real gem!
