wait y'all don't get deposits back on glass bottles (and. plastic bottles.) you return to the store?? any place that sells bottles here is required to take them back as well if i remember right Post

manaphony reply to this Photo22 hours ago

Here we used to reuse sturdy plastic bottles up to twenty times until Big Soda told the government "It's actually less resource intensive to recycle the plastic and make new bottles than to wash them with detergents." so naturally they got their one-use bottles and have been using 100% virgin plastic since. hooray progress.

the only reason to bottle soda in plastic is that it becomes cheaper to ship long distances, and it becomes cheaper to ship lighter plastic bottles from farther away instead of reusing glass ones, because you eliminated all the jobs at the bottling company. Post

America is wild, man. In Germany this system has been used for ages and we also return plastic bottles to be recycled and to be cleaned out and refilled. You pay a little extra and get it all back. People make money just by collecting bottles outside. Same thing goes for certain brands of yogurt btw @palenoface

i was talking about this the other day with my dad, and we were wondering if it would be doable to extend the principle to yogurt. instead of thousands of little plastic pots that will end in the trash, you get thousands of little glass pots that can be washed and reused. Post

social-mediamisadventures reblogged with comment6 days ago

I also want to point out that plastic doesn’t actually get recycled. Theoretically it could be, but in practice it’s too expensive and now with the many different types of plastic, too complicated to sort. Post

My partner and I reuse bottles but my grandmother hates it and doesn't reuse or recycle anything everything goes in the trash for her and if she sees our bottles out she'll throw it away so we've had to hide them in my partner car and once a few months take it to storage

Yeah I had a boomer tell me about that bottling system, and in the same breath blame millennials for not doing it like??? We were children and young adults when that system changed smh

Hate how much plastic I use because my family won't purchase a water filter and keeps buying more bottled water

The problem is human's tossing shit everywhere but in its proper place, just look at the grounds after a leftist protest and a right wing protest. We know who the pigs are. :)

Most fresh veg in UK is brought in from Almeria in Spain. There they have miles and miles of greenhouses made of plastic. When the plastic gets old they throw it out or bury it so the ground around these fake farms is essentially plastic. Of course the EU does nothing but at least they signed that climate accord bit of paper. Post

1/3 of all recycling (currently) is actually recycled. Even if everybody, everywhere recycled, there would still be an insane amount of pollution. It is up to these mega business corporations to change to renewables/biodegradable, or shut the fuck up about the common person recycling when these mofos are why we have oil spills, not jim and courtney from new jersey.... My intuition say this is being pushed by people selling glass bottles At A Premium. Make it a status item like anti-straws, etc. Green Washing Capitalism? But socialism would probably look like this & that feels awesome. Post

I don't know how this is elsewhere but in Mexico when you buy beer if you bring back the glass bottles from last time it's cheaper because you're not paying for the glass again. I barely drink so my numbers might be way off but it's something like a third off for a 24 pack. It used to be the same for sodas but it's become less and less common over the years, though they're making a small comeback. You can find returnable plastic Coke bottles pretty easily though, which are both much sturdier and... Post

One of the breweries in my town recycles and reuses brown beer bottles and it's really pretty damn cool. The machine they use to sterilize them was custom ordered from Germany. Post

In Wisconsin where a lot of milk still comes in glass bottles often with the brand of tge farm they cand from people do bring them back, sometimes to the grocery store and sometimes just to their farm if they know who it is. I dont know if it's that way for everywhere in Wisconsin but ye, people dont keep their milk bottles here really Post

I really miss the easy recycling of glass bottle coke, and the familiar clink of cardboard boxes of bottles on the little conveyor belt at the front of the grocery store. I got a lot of candy as a kid off bringing those back. Post

auressea reblogged with comment14 days ago

same with milk bottles. for HUNDREDS of years.. we reused jugs. first they were clay, then glass. glass is a very stable, simple product that can be re-made easily. Also- recycling is extremely energy intensive. Post

One of the beer brands we offer at the hotel is from a local craft brewery. Whenever they bring a batch, they also collect the empty bottles we have so they can reuse them. They also collect the bottles of another craft brewery that's in a city 3 hrs away, and they exchange them for the ones belonging to them that the other brewery collects in their city. Post

When NYC (finally) enforced its plastic bag ban this year, I started making bets with my friends about how long it would take for plastic bottle bans to begin. Glass bottles are much healthier for the environment, and will eventually deteriorate back into sand in a couple decades. Plastic is more convenient for us, but it’s godawful on the ecosystem. Post

While I 100% agree with this sentiment and would much prefer to have reusable packaging (so much effort goes into it's design and manufacture - why throw it away?), there is a logistical benefit to plastic. Post
