introducing: a mini, jumbled, derailed eddie kaspbrak relationship analysis

tw for sonia’s abuse + quotes from the book

it’s no secret that eddie, unfortunately, did not receive any sort of appropriate, healthy, adult attention/relationships/role-modelling. sonia was abusive. her clear disregard for eddie’s mental health - while claiming all the while that she was trying to keep him safe - can be found in many parts of the novel. some “extra” noteworthy passages/scenes include:

sonia yelling at the gym teacher about eddie’s asthma - which turns into her screaming, “ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY THAT MY SON IS CRAZY????” (all caps and four question marks) in front of the whole class. sonia knows what she’s doing; this isn’t about physically protecting eddie, maybe she can say it is, but it’s about herself. it’s about her own feelings toward her son. “kids huddled around one of the baskets and watched”, therefore effectively humiliating eddie and preventing others from seeing him as someone who they’d want to be friends with. eddie being more afraid of the blood on his shirt and how his mother will react vs possibly having a broken nose eddie’s bad break. the entirety of eddie standing up to sonia is written through sonia’s perspective – and it’s fucked up ! i’ll spare the nuances of his but god bless eddie for standing up to his abusive mother despite being 11 and under obligation to continue living with her

this isn’t a persuasion essay on how and why sonia is emotionally manipulative and abusive (and how 1990 and ch2 seriously downplayed this - but that’s another post that i may write out of frustration throughout the upcoming week) so

moving on: from what we see, eddie doesn’t have healthy relationships. this can be with people, ideas, or vices (which can be easily argued to be [poor] coping mechanisms). sonia, myra, popping pills (and not only pills that promote health; pills that could “you could cruise on”), even the idealistic heroism he finds in bill when they’re kids.

the losers, perhaps, are their own story. it’s great that they survived shared trauma as children together and (almost all of them) go on to do the same as adults, but arguably everybody except mike (who doesn’t forget at all), bev, and eddie are almost better off before they get the call from mike. eddie is not in a happy marriage. eddie is, despite the overwhelming and looming presence of pennywise, able to find true happiness and eventually acceptance on his deathbed when he’s with the losers.

unfortunately it seems that forgetting for him included forgetting standing up to sonia; he still uses his inhaler, he still relies on pills, and he still has a relationship with someone he explicitly says “is his mother”. if you’re looking at eddie’s whole child-arc, you see him gather the courage that he’s always had and stand up to sonia, her turning away his friends while he’s in the hospital being the straw that broke the camel’s back.

this is also interesting as it relates to myra. he’s obviously not happy with her. he’s unable to find that “dim intimation of bravery” that’s referenced in his first chapter. he goes crawling back to the poor attempt at abusive comfort he got from his mother after she died and honestly? eddie’s doing good. he has a limo business. but he’s not being brave. he’s not himself.

while sex is definitely not the defining characteristic of a happy marriage, they don’t really have sex; he feels smothered by her, not unlike the way he was smothered by his mother. eddie leaving myra for his friends is a direct parallel to eddie’s bad break/the hospital scene. remembering derry allows for eddie to be his authentic self. he drops everything and runs to his friends.

unfortunately and fortunately his authentic self “needed to be protected from [his] own dim intimations of possible bravery.” when he’s younger, this is a good thing. this bravery allows him to stand up to sonia.

eddie loves his friends but they’re his downfall and lead to his death when we look at the same sort of “dim intimation of bravery” as an adult.

Gavriil Pavlovich Kondratenko - Nocturne.

idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com

this post went from 600 to 2400 notes in the time it took me to write 3 emails. i’m already terrified for what’s going to happen in there

k but also, as an addendum, the reason we study literary analysis is because everything an author writes has meaning, whether it was intentional or not, and their biases and agendas are often reflected in their choice of language and literary devices and so forth! and that ties directly into being able to identify, for example, the racist and antisemitic dogwhistles often employed by the right wing, or the subconscious word choices that can unintentionally illustrate someone’s bias or blind spot. LANGUAGE HAS WEIGHT AND MEANING! the way we communicate is a reflection of our inner selves, and that’s true regardless of whether it’s a short story or a novel or a blog post or a tweet. instead of taking a piece of writing at face value and stopping there, assuming that there is no deeper meaning or thought behind the words on the page, ask yourself these two questions instead:

1. what is the author trying to say?2. what does the author maybe not realize they’re saying?

because the most interesting reading of any piece of literature, imho, usually occupies the space in between those questions.

sometimes (a lot of the time) i think about post ch1 bill and how his grief over georgie was probably amplified despite getting closure about his death… how bad he would feel about being the one who dragged all his friends (and these new friends, people he barely even knows yet) into neibolt and down into the sewers. like this 13 year old boy already feels responsible for the death of his baby brother and now he has the trauma of six other kids on his conscience.

do you think he thinks he’s evil? do you think he wonders why they all listen to him so easily, how persuasive he is without even having to try? do you think he’s afraid of what he could get his friends to do? afraid of what he might ask them next? hey, if he could shoot his baby brother in the head, who knows what else he could be capable of?

maybe he withdraws from them, slowly. stops letting them be so touchy feely with him—doesnt let richie sling an arm around him or doesn’t melt into mike’s side at movie nights. maybe he stops being the one to organize hangouts and get people all together, then maybe he stops going altogether. he knows it hurts them, and knows they probably don’t understand why he doesn’t want to spend as much time with them anymore, but he rationalizes it by saying that causing them a bit of pain now is worth sparing them whatever he might end up doing down the road. and he misses them, sure, but doesn’t he deserve to hurt after what he did to them? the way they’re going to hurt all their lives, simply because he asked them to?

maybe it goes on for a month or two. maybe the losers notice it happening and try to bring him back, back home to them. and it doesn’t happen overnight, but maybe they tell him, again and again and again that he isn’t a monster and that they love him and none of it is his fault. he might not believe them, but he believes they mean it. and in the end, that might just be enough.
