This is my headcanon for the ending of Pacific Rim. All credit to http://pocketaimee.com/

The big discourse on twitter right now is ‘you can’t say Columbus was a racist monster because no one knew racism was bad in 1492,’ except Isabella I (yeah, that Isabella I) threw his ass in prison for being a racist monster. There are multiple contemporaneous accounts of Columbus in the Caribbean that are basically like “holy shit, this guy is a legit, Texas chainsaw massacre psychopath.” He was considered bad even then.

When there’s documentation that the queen who got the Spanish Inquisition rolling thought Columbus was bad, I feel like it means we can all feel good about establishing another holiday for mattress discounts in this country.

Yep. Contemporaneous accounts of him and De Soto often have the writer essentially going “what the FUCK are you doing, why are you like this.” People AT THE TIME knew it was fucked up just fine.

His crew wanted to mutiny and kill the man and we are all worse off for the fact that they didn’t.

In 1511, only 19 years after Columbus’s first voyage, a Dominican friar named Antonio de Montesinos said this to the Spanish colonists on Hispaniola:

“Tell me by what right of justice do you hold these Indians in such a cruel and horrible servitude? On what authority have you waged such detestable wars against these people who dwelt quietly and peacefully on their own lands? Wars in which you have destroyed such an infinite number of them by homicides and slaughters never heard of before. Why do you keep them so oppressed and exhausted, without giving them enough to eat or curing them of the sicknesses they incur from the excessive labor you give them, and they die, or rather you kill them, in order to extract and acquire gold every day.”

“Racism” was an unknown word (coined in the early 20th century) and perhaps a difficult concept to explain to 15th and 16th century Europeans. But they were fully capable of understanding that marching into some one’s country, and then immediately killing and enslaving them, was wrong. The fact that they did it any way is their own responsibility, and it’s not inappropriate for us to judge them for it.

This is why it matters so much not just which history we tell, but from with perspectives. The fact that the perspectives of the many contemporaries who recognized Columbus as a disgusting racist and tried to stop him are not in our history books is a choice that was made a long way back by people who wanted to continue being racist and loving Columbus.

SKAM season 3: A comedy show

what really gets me about the argument that “americans are so selfish they can’t even care about others enough to stop the virus” is that we fucking did. the vast majority of americans, at great personal and financial cost to ourselves, went inside and distanced and took precautions and isolated and changed our lives to slow the spread and keep our loved ones and strangers safe. we did that for months, even when the government offered piss poor assistance and unemployment skyrocketed and food bank lines lengthened and the death counts climbed and parents with young children reached a breaking point, we still did it. the polling still shows that the vast majority of americans are more worried about easing restrictions too soon even if it hurts the economy. americans give a shit. we care. we made the sacrifices to give our government the time to figure out and implement a plan — to find a way to keep us safe and as healthy as possible and to use the power of the federal government to protect small businesses and feed our children and put a roof over our heads and create education campaigns to get people to socially distance and wear a mask for fucks sake. we did that, and at the end of months of sacrifice they decided that it wasn’t worth the trouble and have left us at the whims of our governors and local officials, left us at the mercy of our employers, left us to die.

americans aren’t selfish — our minority-rule government is — and it’s left us to die.

"This country was founded by a group of slave owners who told us that all men are created equal. To my mind, that is what's known as being stunningly and embarrassingly full of shit." - George Carlin

...PolitiFact going through history to fact check this guy was like that time CNN went through history to dig up dirt on Bernie, and all they found were videos of him planting trees, and telling kids that racism is bad.

It’s extremely unfair to lump Grant in with the “at least”.  The only slave Grant ever owned was forced on him by his father-in-law, and Grant freed him a year later because he couldn’t bring himself to force another man to work.  When he freed William Jones, Grant was dead broke, and Jones could have been sold for a modern equivalent of $30,000 but Grant said fuck the money and freed him anyway.  Grant was frequently criticized for working in the fields himself, not beating his father-in-law’s slaves, treating them too kindly, etc.

Grant did more than ‘speak out’ against the practice, too, given that he’s the one that put down the South in the end.  Not to mention that during his presidency he destroyed the first version of the KKK and did everything in his power to protect the rights of the newly freed citizens.  Unfortunately after he left office the Myth of the Lost Cause took over and slandered his name to hell and gone, so now he is unjustly remembered as a corrupt an ineffective leader.  Remember kids, history IS NOT written by the victors, history is written by those who have a vested interest in being remembered in the way of their own choosing.

where is that renaissance painting with those two fellers and a giant fucking random skull on the floor that looks like it was accidentally stretched out in photoshop

image

THANK YOU

image

somebody please explain

Someone once told me it’s like that because it was designed to be hung in a stairwell so the skull pops out as you walk past.

…I guess it works but you have to be at a pretty sharp angle

There was a whole trend at one point where artists would include something in their paintings (usually a skull, for whatever reason) that’s super distorted in just the right way so that it looks normal if you hold the painting up to a convex/concave mirror. I have absolutely no idea why. But I think that’s what’s going on here.

In case anyone’s curious, here’s what it looks like when you walk past it irl:

image

It does have a 3D effect to it! It’s pretty neat, guess it would be even more impressive to people from the 14th century.

honestly, people just looking at the skull are missing the real deal here

image

You can read any implied text you see in this thing, even the book, that’s how detailed it is. Look at the painting on those letters!

image

jesus christ you’re just showing off now, Hans!

image image

HANS OH MY GOD

anyway, the skull apparently had some meaning about the transcendence of death, you can only see it clearly when you can’t see the world clearly and vice versa, but man, I’m all about the detail in this guy’s shit

No, I think you’re missing the real deal here

imageimage

as an art historian, i think this is the best post on tumblr
