It is really hard to tell what you will find on here. Lot's of animals. Occasional lesbian here or there. Sometimes, I will share my saltyness about things. Best of luck.

Hi! Senior geology student with a special interest in volcanoes here!

As people are freaking out in the notes, I want to clarify a few things about volcanoes, and in particular Yellowstone.

1) Yellowstone is not "overdue for an eruption". That concept is a misunderstanding of how geologists determine the annual likelihood of a volcanic eruption. Volcanoes don't follow a schedule. A volcano's per-year likelihood of eruption is based on an average amount of time between major eruptions in the past. If a volcanoes average time between eruptions is 725,000 years, there is a 1/725,000 chance of it erupting in any given year. It is NOT a prediction of future eruptions. A volcano could erupt twice in two years. It could erupt one year and then never again.

2) someone mentioned the volcano being "150 years overdue for an eruption". That is a NEGLIGIBLE amount of time on the geologic time scale. There's an average 725,000 years between the last few eruptions. 150 years is nothing.

3) If a Yellowstone eruption DID occur, it would not likely be a catastrophic one. As the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone is mostly solid, it isn't likely that there's even enough magma for an eruption. Yellowstone may not ever even HAVE another catastrophic eruption.

4) When people say that "scientists say Yellowstone could erupt next week" or anything along those lines it's deliberate misinterpretation to get you to read an article. Every single time the scientist is trying to explain why Yellowstone isn't overdue, and that a volcano could erupt today or 500,000 years from now, therefore fearmongering about it needs to stop.

5) yes, there were 111 recorded earthquakes in Yellowstone during march. There were also 62 in Washington State in the last week. Earthquakes are literally always happening, and the Yellowstone observatory has stated that this activity is normal. Even where you are right now there are earthquakes. You may not feel them yourself, but a seismograph does. Earthquakes and a geyser are not indicative of a Yellowstone supereruption.

6) Steamboat geyser went through periods of more frequent eruptions in the 60s and 80s as well. This is not new.

The Earth isn't stable and unchanging. Don't freak out every time Yellowstone Does A Thing. That's what Earth does.

Are there any further concerns?

“We want the museum to understand that the moai are our family, not just rocks. For us [the statue] is a brother; but for them it is a souvenir or an attraction,” said Anakena Manutomatoma, who serves on the island’s development commission. “Once eyes are added to the statues, an energy is breathed into the moai and they become the living embodiment of ancestors whose role is to protect us.”

isnt the point of a museum to preserve history though? id prefer something be in a controlled environment than outside in the elements.

If museums want to have things on display they should display the stuff their own country created through history instead of stealing from other peoples and nations. AND they should give back everything they stole from everyone else.

If they want to display art from other countries then they should afford everyone the same respect they do European artists between England, France, and a few select other countries by arranging special exhibitions with those museums in all countries and nations. (I’m going to admit I don’t know how special exhibits work-I’m working off of what I assume happens between museums; I tried looking it up on Google but I could not find something that explained it to me, probably because I don’t know what to Google in the first place to learn about this, so, I could be completely incorrect for this entire paragraph so if I am just ignore me, and if you have the time/energy send me things explaining how this all works).

-FemaleWarrior

You’re right on the nose! Museums across the world will work together on travelling exhibits, setting up a sort of exchange, however they can be extremely expensive and difficult to prepare, and there’s no guarantee that what you’re viewing has been stolen or found. Also, most museums that do have items from other countries have set up an excursion to said country with permission from the government. (That is why the british-american excursions in egypt were allowed to happen in the 1920s) This is not stealing, and the country can ask for those artifacts back at any time, usually as a donation or trade to their own museums.

(Stolen: taken from a public or private place without permission, just like the Moai)

(Found: uncovered in an archaeological dig with permission from the host country, or found when researching the life of a person or family, and requested to be used by their relatives or the host country)

Most special exhibits will come from a large museum within your country, and won’t come from another country’s museum unless you live in a place like London, DC, New York, Paris, etc.

When you go to a museum with a special traveling exhibit, you will be told where that special exhibit is from (museum wise). If you think that said museum has stolen an object from your culture, you can write a letter explaining so and why you think so. Most archaeologists and curators are more than happy to right the wrongs of archaeologists and curators in the past. Its not the 1800s. We are no longer grave robbers. (Seriously though, most archaeologists and curators I’ve talked to condemn those guys with a passion, but sometimes theres no way for them to know if an item was stolen or gifted, or if they do know, then who to return it to.)

Thank you for explaining it! Do you know the job title of the person to whom these letters should be written, or where to look on museum websites for them?

-FemaleWarrior

If you write a letter, you will want to write a letter to a curator or director, however the director will have more power. If you can, write one to each.

Every Museum is different, and each has a different website. Some don’t have a website at all. Make sure you are writing to the museum you visited, and to the department that would be most likely to take care of it. Here I’ve marked in red (bad, don’t contact) blue (last resort) and green (this is a perfect way to start!) .

*petting my cat* please cure my depression cat: *prrbhbphr* me: thanks

Fun fact!!

Cats don’t only purr because they’re content! When they’re sick, or when a kitten/companion is sick, they purr to help heal faster. So if you’re feeling down and your cat friend comes up to purr on you, it’s because they sense something’s up and they want to help you feel better!

Imagine beeing an animal that literally has a build in ‘comfort my loved ones’ function and still have people think you are an asshole by nature.

My mom has an asshole cat. He’s pushy, standoffish, demanding, hates to be pet, won’t sit on laps, grumbles and bites other cats. All the typical asshole cat stuff. (Yes, he’s healthy and has regular check-ups; he’s just a dick.)

I got really sick while house-sitting for my mom last winter. My nose and ears sealed up completely, my chest was congested, my throat cracked, my eyes swelled up and I couldn’t really sleep because my airways kept closing the second I’d lie down. I’d just lie on the couch on a mound of pillows and periodically fall in and out of a daze.

After about three days of this, I snapped alert all of a sudden in the wee hours of morning, choking, unable to inflate my lungs all the way.

My mom’s asshole cat was huddled down on all fours smack in the middle of my chest, looking horrifically uncomfortable with the situation, PURRING and PURRING like a damn chainsaw.

He cracked an eye to glare at me when I moved to pet him. This doesn’t make us friends, he said.

“Good kitty,” I croaked, rubbing his cheek with one finger. “Nice kitty. Good boy.”

You stink, he said. You disgust me.

Then he brushed off my finger, shut his eye, hunkered tighter, and kept purring. I fell asleep. I don’t know exactly how long he was there, but it was at least a solid hour.

Even asshole cats will cast heal on you.
