Please help a homeless black trans couple on TDOV Covid-19 has us really fucked over: TW/ for death mention, eating disorder mention.

I don’t think things have gotten this desperate since we became homeless back in 2018. We’re still homeless and everything’s come to a grinding hault in our progress to get out of the shelter since NYC has been put on lockdown because of the pandemic. Most devastatingly, me and my partner have both lost the jobs that we were supposed to start this month due to the pandemic. We had gotten temporary positions as census takers that would’ve lasted us through the next 6months. As of right now, all the money that we receive from public assistance goes towards paying our necessary bills. To make matters worse, our shelter is now demanding 30% of our assistance be given back as a “ savings plan “ that we won’t see until 3 months after we leave the shelter.

We can’t see housing specialists or brokers for apartments let alone get in contact with the HRA to talk about our vouchers, the social workers at the shelter aren’t coming in anymore, and they’re no longer able to give us our weekly one roll ration of toilet paper. Thankfully we finally got a new microwave on our floor so we’re able to do more as of cooking, but we’re still limited to what can be cooked between a microwave and a small rice cooker with a dorm size mini fridge capacity for what we’re able to work with. The stress of our already turbulent living situation coupled together with the corona virus has taken a severe toll on both our mental and physical health as we’re both disabled. My partner has been struggling with Agoraphobia, asthma, anorexia, ptsd, depression, anxiety, and they’re autistic. I have ptsd depression anxiety and adhd. I’ve written extensively about our journey and struggle with seeking mental health treatment ( past the reblogs of my donations posts prior ) and the situation has only been exasperated by the pandemic. Our mental health providers, and primary care clinics have been closed and all our in person appointments have been switched to phone calls. We’re no longer able to pick up our meds in person and they have to be delivered to us since I’m unable to go to my nearest pharmacy to get them myself. I’m also uninsured, meaning I’m now paying out of pocket for my medications plus delivery. I’m in the process of seeing if there’s anything they can do to help accommodate me, but with the way corona has overwhelmed medical personnel across the U.S I’m not too hopeful.

On March 22nd and 24th my partner was sense to the ER twice for severe asthma attacks that nearly stopped their breathing. They also were displaying symptoms of COVID-19. They weren’t tested since they didn’t stay in critical condition for long. While in the first and longest visit they witnessed first hand the overwhelming affects of the virus in hospitals. The beds were doubled/ tripled up with bodies of people in different forms of critical condition. They were surrounded by people who tested positive and even witnessed an elderly man die from the virus. It was an extremely traumatic experience that lasted 6+ hrs. Trauma aside we’ve both been in close proximity to a friend who tested positive for Corona virus last week. We won’t be able to get tested since availability of tests in NYC are limited to those who are near death at this point. My partner is terrified since they have a compromised immune system and already suffer with respiratory problems that have only worsened due to weeks of malnutrition and dehydration. I’ve been completely overwhelmed trying to care for my partner as well as trying to stay safe myself and also being the only person capable of caring for our sick friend as well as my best friend @aaliyahbreaux who’s a black trans woman at risk of homelessness I’ve been assisting in her mover to NYC. I’ve had to break quarantine frequently to manage my loved ones and it’s been stressful expensive and near impossible.

I need as much help as I’m able to get but here’s a breakdown of expenses thus far

* Our storage unit bill for the next 2 months $148

* Our phone bill for the next 2 months $100

* the hospital bills us for my partner (will be updating with picture proof once I find it) $2800

* Transportation fare to my friend who has been cleared by our medical providers to give me and my partner our bi-weekly T shots for the next 2 months while the clinic is closed. $240 ( each trip is 30$ back and forth and I’ll need 8?trips in total )

* A new fan for our room in the shelter ( ours was stolen ) 70$

* Laundry ( via delivery service ) 50$

Dear April, please be good to me.

Dear April, please be good to me.

Sometime before April 1st, you should be getting a letter in the mail from the US Census! That letter has a password to let you take the census online. If you do not take the census online, a representative of the Census comes to your house in person to read you the questionnaire for you. I’m one of those reps, but let’s be honest, with the corona virus, I’m even less inclined to go to people’s houses than before, especially since many of the people I talk to tend to be older or frail.

So please try to take the Census online, or help others take it online.

There is no reason you can’t share your census, it’s not the SAT, but the census bureau including their temp employees are never permitted to release the information gathered in any way that would identify you.

There is No Citizenship Question on the Census. There Are not Questions about Immigration Status.

There is a question on race (as always) and this year it does ask to specify where your ancestors come from. I’m white American of multiple generations, but it would not let me proceed without writing in ‘german’ or ‘irish’ for ancestral origins.

Similarly, there is a question about relations to other people in the household, where if you are married/dating someone, it does ask to specify if you are in a same-sex relationship or not.

The ‘what gender are you’ questions use the male/female as the only answers.

I state these facts with the sole intent of relaying information on what you will find on the census if you fill it out.

Filling out the census is a national duty, the same as voting. By filling it out, we arrange delegates, local and state funding, and gain a better picture of our current reality as a part of a multicultural nation.

**

Today and tomorrow are the last days to be counted.

You can do your census by phone by calling 844-330-2020.

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY.

The Census self response is open until August 31st, April 1st was never a hard deadline as the original, pre COVID 19 schedule, had self response open until July 31st.

https://2020census.gov/en/news-events/operational-adjustments-covid-19.html

Only 20% of households receive a census questionnaire, the rest must go online or call to fill it out. You can fill it out in multiple languages.

Regardless of citizenship status, everyone must respond to the Census. As someone who spent 25 years undocumented, I understand the trepidation. But keep in mind that if you self respond NOW you will not receive an enumerator following up at your door later. Enumerators will be sent out mid to late April through August. Census private/identifiable information is also sealed for 72 years and cannot be accessed by other government agencies.

Do NOT skip the race question, especially if you are a person of color or from a marginalized community. I understand that it’s a messy question to have to answer, especially when you are part of the diaspora, but it is VITAL that this demographic information to collected. (Latinos, if you do not specifically identify as one of the listed races you can mark Other and list Origin. Latinx identity is messy but that’s a separate post)

An example of why the race question matters: when non-profits (or any agency) are asking for funding (mine specifically focuses on marginalized communities) we use census data to plead our case that we need more funding to be able to provide interpreters at events, bilingual materials, diverse teachers, and the training for places to become sensitive locations (which ICE/CBP cannot enter).

The majority of time, the people with money don’t give a shit about what you have to say if you don’t have the numbers to back it up.

POC are historically undercounted, which fucks us over in the long run, please make sure you fill out your census. Fill it out for your parents/ grandparents if you have to (but let them know if you do so they don’t also try to fill it out and mess up the count).

Other things effected by the statistics that come from the census: Hospital beds, bus routes, road work, cross walks, literally any public service ever. This paper lists 132 programs that were chosen by using Census Bureau data to distribute more than $675 billion in funds in 2015. Skip to page five to see the list.

TL;DR THE CENSUS SELF RESPONSE DATE IS OPEN PAST APRIL 1ST,GO TO  https://my2020census.gov/ TO FILL IT OUT NOW, TAKES LESS THAN 5 MINS.
