Ya know what, I dont think we talk about the fact that Gabrielle Benele was with the Vestige during their fight against Molag Bal for the first time.

Like, she was a major player in the Battle of Coldharbour. She sat at the war table alongside Darien, King Dynar, Vanus, and everyone else. She went through everything the player did, and lost someone she loved deeply. So deeply that she dedicates her life to figuring out what happened to him and trying to save him.

She was just a woman in the Mages Guild with a talent for portals who ended up standing alongside the last Ayleid king, the founder of her guild, a Light of Meridia, and the Soulless One as they fought to save Nirn.

image

Appreciate her.

First of all, Gabrielle is precious and deserves only good things.

When we first meet her, she’s this talented but somewhat scatter-brained wizard who appears to be just another NPC. But all throughout the Glenumbra, Alik’r and Bangkorai questlines, she turns out to be one of the Vestige’s closest friends and allies. She helps the Vestige save the Covenant on several occasions. She’s a lifesaver, opening portals just at the right time. And so when she ended up joining the final battle against Molag Bal, I didn’t even question it. Of course she would be there. Why wouldn’t she be? If Darien was there to represent the fighters guild, then obviously Gabrielle would be there to do the same for the mages guild, right? Let’s just say I forgot about the literal founder of the guild being there, okay? She was always THE mage.

But you know what really gets me about her? She could have gotten out at the last moment, like the Vanos siblings did. She could have left that last fight to these powerful characters with personal stakes in the outcome of this entire mess. She hasn’t had her soul ripped out or anything like that. She could have walked away, and despite being “just an ordinary mage”, SHE DIDN’T.

Gabrielle Benele is a badass.

It's also really interesting how she (and Darien technically) is a recurring character in the Covenant questline, and features so greatly in the Coldharbour one. If you played the other alliances, you wouldn't have any idea who she was. No other Pact or Dominion characters feature as importantly as the Covenant ones do. Yet she's the most "normal" of the entire group of five to finish the charge (if we are aware that Darien isn't really normal).

And yes absolutely! She had every reason to leave this to the big leagues and stay behind with the Vanos siblings but she saw it through to the very end. I love her so much, my badass breton girled friend...

As an AD player who did not do DC before Coldharbour (and have no plans to on my main, for story purposes) so I didn’t get attached to her OR Darien until after I made a DC character.

I think this is actually somewhat shortsighted on the game’s part, tbh - if you’re an AD player who has not done the other alliances, you are effectively alone in Coldharbour with very few familiar faces - there’s no real connections to be had. That quest banks on you KNOWING Skordo and Darien and Gabrielle and the Vanos’.

Now that I know who Darien is, later, and Gabrielle, I find Darien’s sacrifice and Gabrielle’s grief more poignant. But at the time it meant very little to me.

It took me until a second playthrough to fully appreciate a lot of the characters in Coldharbour in all honestly. Like it is cool and all to bring in some familiar faces, but it almost felt like you needed to play all of the alliances before Coldharbour in order to appreciate the questline.

Or maybe it’s partly on purpose for replayability. But yes it is absolutely unbalanced toward DC players considering the Cov gets HALF of the war table.

Part 2 of this post about my imagined ESO endgame battle against Meridia!!!

Darien, the Vestige, Gabrielle, and yes even Skordo (get in here you asshole) all hug and cry over each other, exhausted from fighting and so goddamn happy to be together again, like during the Battle of Coldharbour. Darien talks about feeling his light fading after Summerset, and not really waking up again until the Vestige started showing him his memories. He doesn’t remember anything that was happened during all those years, but he’s so, so happy to see everyone together and alive again. But he knows he can’t keep Meridia out of the Tower for long.

What happens next is not something I’ve thought on too much. The only thing I’ve really been able to think of is a repeat of the main quest, in which the Vestige has to sacrifice one of their companions to empower the Amulet of Kings so they can fight Meridia. Except it cannot be Darien since he isn’t mortal, and the Vestige is the only one capable of handling that kind of power. So you have to pick Gabrielle or Skordo to die. I know, I’m cruel.

From there, it is Darien and the Vestige fighting Meridia side by side atop the Crystal Tower. It is a hard fought battle, but they do eventually win. Except they know that Meridia will be back, and will not stop until her plan succeeds. She isn’t like Molag Bal, in that he needed the Covenant with Akatosh to be broken for his plan to begin. Meridia can just keep trying and trying again. They need something more permanent.

Meridia has been temporarily displaced from all of the realms. The only way to prevent her from returning, is for there to be someone already in her role - according to an old resident of the Shivering Isles. The Vestige remembers this conversation, something about mantling. Meridia can’t come back if someone is in her role.

You have to decide. Will you, the Vestige, take Meridia’s place, or will Darien?

There is a reason this is the ending of ESO. Either you choose Darien to sacrifice himself once more and never see him again, or you do it yourself and go about the rest of your time playing ESO in a fashion similar to the post-Shivering Isles HoK. Eventually the process will be complete and the Vestige’s previous life will be gone from their memory. They once again become a vestige of their former self.

you know what, I changed my mind, fuck you Em

Definitely still time to change my mind about how the Vestige defeats Meridia but I’m too big of a fan of mantling Meridia to not include that.

“I erect the spine of greeting, new friend of Jee-lar. I am happy to meet you, and that’s a fact!”

You know I don't think I've ever actually talked about my imagined ESO endgame Meridia battle...

The ending of ESO in my mind would center around Meridia attempting to wipe the slate of life clean in order to stop the perversion of the dead. You cannot make undead if there are no people to rise or no one to raise them after all. She sees mortals as all having the potential to turn to necromancy, and sees that as something that must be cleansed.

You, the Vestige, team up with Gabrielle Benele and Skordo the Knife (as well as others but they become your primary team for reasons to come) to take the fight to Meridia herself in a fight similar to that against Molag Bal. How Meridia is empowering herself, I'm undecided on. Perhaps she took inspiration from Nocturnal in Summerset and is using the Crystal Tower? It would be very poetic all things considered...

After you, Gabrielle, and Skordo make it to Meridia, she sends down her Champion stop you. He looks familiar. You call out his name, but he shows no sign of recollection. Meridia uses that against you all, your connection to her Golden Knight. She taunts that she had to remove all those pesky memories of his mortal life from his mind to restore his loyalty to her and her alone. She tells her Golden Knight to stop you all, and you have to fight him 1v1 while your allies hold off her other minions.

(If you have done Covenant, Coldharbour, Summerset, and all other quests involving Meridia and Darien) Gabrielle thinks she can trigger his memories if she could just show them to him. She remembers a spell, but trying to charge and focus it takes time, and she can only show one memory at a time. You have to hold off Darien without killing him, while keeping Gabrielle and Skordo safe (I do consider the option of just killing Darien but the fight should be long and difficult either way. Similarly you could let Gabrielle and Skordo fall since this is meant to be the Final quest).

After a set amount of time, a flashback will occur. Camlorn, you meeting Darien and saving the town. Nothing. Another period of combat. Angof. You think you see a hint of something before he charges at you again. Fight. Rivenspire, a series of memories from meeting him at the gates to drinks after the coronation of the new ruler, he recognizes the Orc from those memories. He yells at you to stop with these lies. There's a new anger in him. Bangkorai, him being pleasantly surprised and a little afraid seeing you're involved, getting to team up with you and Gabrielle again. He shouts at you all to stop but does not stop fighting. Coldharbour. The battle, the fight, the losses. He becomes enraged.

Summerset. The truth, the sacrifice, the betrayal. He lets up just slightly, not that you notice in your exhaustion. Gabrielle shouts that she only has enough strength for one more spell. The final memory shows all of the instances of Darien's friends mourning him, remembering him fondly, his father finding out about his son's death. All of the people who knew him and cared for him as a mortal.

He collapses. He uses all his strength to push Meridia out of the Tower, albeit temporarily. He remembers.
