Perfect Chemistry, s7e152b

It really says something about how society treats children that today I told a 13 year old I was proud of her hard work and she nearly cried into my shoulder.

This was followed by me telling her and her sister that I thought their stories about D&D were really fun and creative, and them both being flat-out shocked that “anyone actually likes listening to us ramble.”

Like. Y’all. These kids should not be surprised that adults will actually listen to them and engage with them. This should not be a weird outlier.

Please be nice to children and treat them like people????

If you want the saddest proof of this, try babysitting kids between the ages of 8 and 14

I watched this kid who was 9 or 10? and he begged and begged to go to this  video game store that he never got to go to, because it was a 40 minute drive- I agreed, we went, and the entire drive he lectured me on Zelda and Pokemon. I don’t care much about Zelda or Pokemon lore? but I pretended to be interested and listened enough to ask questions to keep him going. He ended up not being able to afford anything, so we drive home- almost an hour and a half just driving and sitting in the back of my car, and he tells me it was so much fun and can I babysit again?

Fucking listen to children and engage them in conversation- even letting them ramble about some shit you don’t care about and won’t remember is a huge deal for them, and it shouldn’t have to be, but it is

One of my students wrote a very eloquent and well-researched paper for her english class about the unfair advantages and lack of accountability given to student athletes, and she specifically called out how much worse it is with football and basketball, and bruh. People are getting heated over this shit. She spoke nothing but the truth, and the football and basketball teams are PISSED — coaching staff included. Like she legit created a little controversy at our school by calling out the fact that athletics are prioritized over academics. WITH SOURCES.

And what’s funny is she played it smart — not only by giving herself some plausible deniability by writing it about high schools and colleges in general rather than just about our school, but also by calling out the worst sports specifically. She could have left it at ALL student athletes, but by explicitly stating that football and basketball are the worst perpetrators, she won all the other athletes to her side — golf, tennis, swimming, track. Instead of having all student athletes at her throat, she turned everyone against the basketball and football teams.

I’m so proud of her. Nobody listens to teachers when we bring up that half the football team is failing all their classes, but let a fellow student bring it up and everyone’s ready to riot.

When I was in high school I was tasked with writing a paper on a school issue and I wrote about how school budget was being disproportionately favored towards the football team and other sports in general. At the time, Colorado had laws in place that made it so anyone with the desire could request budget information for public schools and how they were used.

My mom had done that. Printed off like 80 pages of budget reports. We found staggeringly huge money wastes. The football team had hired a retired NFL coach (not cheap) as a second string coach. Instead of using the county approved vendors, the Poms team had their uniforms custom made at Victoria secret because the pomp’s coach worked there on weekends but the price was like three times that of the approved vendor.

I brought some of these points up in my paper in discussion how other extracurriculars like theater, band, etc had to have boosters to be able to afford basic necessities (theater had asked for some extra dividing walls that could be used to partition the choir room to allow for boys and girls to change in privacy instead of in the open like we usually did but were denied because it wasn’t in our budget). I was told by my teacher it was incorrect and I needed to cite sources and not “libel” programs at our school with baseless accusations. I brought in the forms printed off the next day and was told I was being snotty and vindictive and that those programs helped bring in money from the state because our football team was so good.

The band room had instruments from the 70s that were falling apart. The theater department didn’t have a budget for set design so the director spent it out of her own pocket to get screws and wood. There were ACADEMIC clubs that had to be cancelled because there wasn’t money to pay teachers the overtime to be sponsors after school. The school’s television program, which ran the daily announcements, operated with some of the most ancient tech. Again, because their budgets had been slashed in favor of sportsball kicking.

Teacher was a sponsor for one of the sports that had just recently gotten brand new uniforms despite the fact the old ones were only about 3 years old. I was livid about being shoved off. I didn’t care that the football team making state helped with some sponsorships—they didn’t need to be dumping money into professional NFL coaches. The Poms team could have done a booster to get the fancy uniforms. It was ridiculous. I ended up going to a school board meeting and asking why on earth this was acceptable.

Well. Apparently it was not and not being monitored because the following year the principal (who was so avidly pro sports you would have thought she assumed school academics were an annoying side purpose for public education dollars) was asked to retire. Can’t fire teachers or administrators easily thanks to the unions which have their upsides but seriously so much shitty behavior was covered up by that. It ended up leveling off and the next year we got more money in the budgets for other extracurriculars but I won’t ever forget the attitude I got for trying to expose the grifting done for sports over academics or “nerdy” extracurriculars.

Karma got it though, the following year we sold out every damn night of our production of West Side Story and made back our budget and then some.

Sports are important, don’t get me wrong but the privilege they are afforded, the lack of accountability at the top, and the turning of eyes in favor of making wins is sickening and it goes beyond just college level athletics.

This has changed how I view Inteleon immensely.

im sorry i have to point this out but TWERFs are smart. keep reading. they intentionally employ tactics that they know will get people to switch to their side.

they know how to argue people in. they were argued in. they know about nontransfemnine people’s latent transmisogyny and they know that we are not as vigilant as we should be. they make popular posts.

they are undercover. they pretend to be allies. there are nonbinary TWERFs and TWERFs that are WOC. keep reading. these people have been coerced in and know how to coerce others in. there are many different ways, and there are many different things to look out for.

when i say don’t argue with TWERFs, when i say ignore them and don’t give them a platform in the first place, it’s not a giving up tactic. it’s because TWERFs know that if they can point out one tiny flaw in your logic, or spout some bullshit that some nontransfeminine person has thought about before, they’ve hooked someone.

TWERFs count on preying on the young and impressionable, the people that don’t know or talk to transfeminine people. this has to be pointed out. the only reason i know this is because i am not transfeminine and i have seen many of my peers, not transfeminine, fall to them.

stop arguing that they’re stupid. don’t let your guard down.

EDIT: and they are only one specific type of transmisogyny so watch yourself

I feel like it’s pertinent to explicitly say, although OP touched on it:

When TERFs “debate” you, the purpose is not to convert YOU to their ideology. The purpose is to change the mind of onlookers. Even if you are 100% confident in the necessity of maintaining an alliance with trans women, there is at least one of your followers who is NOT.

Don’t debate TERFs. Don’t boost their ideology. Don’t let them misconstrue your words and thereby paint you (and, by extension, the entirety of the transfeminine populace) as ridiculous.

It’s so much more important to make space (on you blog, but more importantly, offline) for the voices of trans women. Share the writings of trans female thinkers. Listen to trans women. Talk to trans women. You might just make some friends in the process.

This is the same reason why you don't debate Nazis. The beliefs of both groups are obviously horseshit when you get down to it, but there are people who are very good at arguing otherwise. This isn't a new tactic on the far right either; neo-Nazis have been at it since George Lincoln Rockwell and his ilk were trying to get civil rights activists to debate them.

People on this website… Have no idea what a baby boomer actually is…

A quick and dirty guide to some generations:

The Greatest Generation: Born between 1901 and 1925 (approximately).  The people who fought in World War II, parents to the Baby Boomers.   Steve Rogers is part of the Greatest Generation.

The Silent Generation: Born 1926-1945 (approx).  Grew up in the Great Depression.  This is your grandmother who refused to throw away anything “just in case.”  Known for not being particularly politically active.  Donald Draper is part of the Silent Generation.

Baby Boomers: Born 1946-1964 (approx).  After the Greatest Generation got back from World War II, they started having lots and lots of babies. A boom of babies, if you will.  Hence Baby Boomers.  Baby Boomers are people in between the ages of 55 and 73 today.  They grew up in a time of unprecedented affluence, thus their association with consumerism and Captialism.  Your stereotypically 80s businessman is a Baby Boomer, but so were Anti-war protesters of the 1970s, so it’s complicated.

Generation X (Gen X): Born 1965-1980 (approx) The MTV Generation, the Latchkey generation, inventors of Hip-hop and Grunge.  Gen Xers are between the ages of 39 and 54 today, so most middle aged people.

Millennials (Gen Y): Born 1981-1996 (approx).  Unique for having grown up in the early days of Information Age.  “90s kids.”  Unable to find the intense economic prosperity our parents the Baby Boomers were able to find.  A much maligned generation, we have been described as both “narcissitic” and “incredibly generous.”  Millennials are between the ages of 23 and 38.

Generation Z (Gen Z):  Born 1997-Now (approx).  Kids!  Gen Z is known for having  been born deep into the information age, and therefore not really remembering a time before modern technology.  Gen Z is a very politically active generation

the concept of how sir arthur conan doyle was as a person always sends me into fits. imagine making the most famous literary character of all time but you hate the character so much you try to kill him off. but everyone is so horny for this asshole detective they make you bring him back. even your own mother gets mad when he’s dead because she likes him. raising your prices to ridiculous rates to avoid writing holmes stories backfired and now you’re rich. it’s absolutely a pain because it’s keeping you from your true passion which is spiritualism despite how one of your good friends harry houdini keeps telling you it’s bullshit. you consider your best novels to be historical ones but they’re well over shadowed by the nemesis of your own creation sherlock fucking holmes. some fake photographs from some kids convinced you faeries were real and you wrote a whole book about it. you started writing stories in medical school. and yes, also you are a doctor. after you’re dead, they erect a statue of sherlock holmes across the street from your birthplace, causing you to probably roll over one hundred eighty degrees in your grave and scream into your casket pillow.

I'm just imagining if everyone on the goddamn planet decided my magical dragon OC from grade six was the best thing ever created and I was forced to write about them until I died and then a million years later they made a very serious TV show about them
