wait, aren't you from france?

The police is sending vandals into gated communities to justify the military takeover of Bogotá ordered by President Ivan Duque, but no, I do not live in a military State AT ALL.

Por favor tengan cuidado muchach@s bogotan@s.

Bogotá literally is under a curfew right now and 4000 militares have been sent to make sure no one gets out, and the man who's going to be overseeing everything is responsible for 45 falsos positivos committed by soldiers he was the commandant of, but nothing to see here. It's fine. The country isn't turning into an outright military dictatorship at all.

What are falsos positivos, tumblr user ronweasley? you ask.

image

People have already died. Where is the "this is fine" dog meme when you need it? 🙃

image

ESMAD (military police) is out there killing people, no big deal, nothing to see here.

Duque truly be out there paying 50000 pesos to desperate Venezuelans to destroy property so he can then send soldiers to Bogotá. Wild.

Soldiers now admitting on social media they had orders to go cause chaos as well so panicked people would stay home instead of going to protest. Absolute madness.

image

They’ve killed an 18 year-old-kid who was marching for access to higher education. In a peaceful march. He was marching with his grandmother. Banging on pots from their own kitchen.

People in my neighbourhood are crying out his name.

This is absolute fucking madness.

Please, please, please get informed about what’s been going on in Bogotá over the last few days. It’s only going to get worse from now on.

Me looking fly as shit in Medellin. Outfits on fucking point.

So this week-end was extra long and I went on a trip away from Bogota. First an overnight in Guatapé and then three more in Medellin. Turns out my hostel in Guatapé had a bed bug problem. Thankfully I realized that and could take measures to make sure I wouldn’t be bringing the insects from hell at home. Namely, when I got to Medellin, before I did anything else, I went to a laundry service and explained the situation, telling the male employee “I need you to wash and dry every single one of my things, including my backpack, my shoes, and even the clothes I’m wearing, down to my underwear. Do you have a bathroom I can stay naked in for two hours while you do that for me?”

Piece of shit spent two hours commenting on how it was the first time he had a naked woman in his bathroom at work, asking if I was single, who I was traveling with, if he could take me out while I was in Medellin. Of course he had literally all of my things so I couldn’t outright say “no, you absolute gross piece of shit” in fear he’d just throw everything away but I laughed nervously and gave a non-committal “tal vez” (maybe) for an answer. When finally my stuff was ready, he took everything to me, commenting on my body. I got dressed and got out of the bathroom to repack my backpack outside of this tiny cubicle I’d been in for to hours, and of course he touched my hips, telling me he had liked what little he’d seen. The moment I had everything repacked I sprinted out of there before he had a chance to ask for my phone number.

That’s not a case of a man misreading the situation and thinking maybe he has a chance. That was a case of a man who could tell I was uncomfortable but I was 100% vulnerable and reliant on him. He was fucking LIVING for it. LIVING FOR IT. They absolutely thrive on our misery. Pieces of shit.

He’s gonna have an amazing, incredible life.

I cannot begin to explain what it feels like to see Keane coming back. For the longest time this band was my entire life. I am not exaggerating when I say they saved me.

I was a depressed, suicidal 13 year-old who was bullied at school and with an abusive father who wanted nothing more to do with life when I first heard “Somewhere Only We Know” on the radio and became obsessed.

When I finally left my parents’ house, in June 2006, Under the Iron Sea was coming out two days later and it literally helped me keep my head out of the water.

Keane is the reason English went from being just another class at school to my favourite language in the world and I spent three years in the British isles, because I had to be as good as possible to understand and participate in their online forum. I followed this band in six different countries, to thirteen different concerts. I literally spent all my money on them for years, and many of the online friends I’ve had for 15 years are friends I made in the Hopes and Fears era.

When they split up in 2012 I was a mess, because my life back then also was one and I didn’t know how I’d survive. And then as I started feeling better I stopped listening to Keane as often. I think for a few years I only listened to their albums on the anniversary of their releases, and the feeling in my chest was different. It wasn’t painful anymore, it felt like coming home. Almost never there, but when you are, it’s calming and peaceful and familiar.

When they announced they were coming back earlier this year, I was cautiously optimistic, and also I was wondering what it would mean to a Marina who wasn’t depressed anymore, to a Marina who actually enjoyed her life, to a Marina who didn’t need this band the way she had in the past.

Turns out this Marina needed their newest album without even knowing it. I’m at a crossroads in my life, now: when Keane split up in 2012, I was in Ireland. Seven years later, I have lived in seven different countries and the yearning I have to finally settle down somewhere for longer than nine months at a time is reflected in Tim’s songs about his crumbling marriage and family life, somehow. Our stories are obviously very different, but I cannot listen to Thread or Stupid Things without hearing what it feels like to leave everything behind and have to rebuild them again year after year. I’m tired, I don’t want to move anymore. I want a place I love, with friends, with maybe someone to love more deeply. I understand that yearning for normalcy and stability I feel permeating Keane’s songs on Cause and Effect.

So I’m very, very grateful they’re back, and while I’m looking forward to having a healthier relationship with this album than I did with their previous four albums, you can bet your sweet ass nothing else is going to be listened to in this house for the next three months. Can’t wait to see them live in Bogota and tell them just how much they’ve meant to me all these years. Here’s to the end of an era, and the beginning of another.
