An older gentleman came into the nature center and asked me a bunch of questions about tarantulas. Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a picture.

“My son is a DNR officer in Arizona,” he said. “He found this tarantula with a tail in his house. Do you know what species it is?”

I looked at the photo, but from six feet away it was difficult to understand what I was seeing. I had him send it to the official park email so that I could take another look at it. Here is my reply:

Upon closer examination, it appears that this is not a tarantula at all. I was happily able to identify it as Manumala noxhydria during the parasitic secondary stage of its lifecycle. It was probably wandering into your son’s house in search of a suitable host. Use caution when approaching. They are considered an invasive species in all parts of the world and are capable of spraying a paralytic chemical into the face of predators and potential hosts. Careful destruction is recommended. For more information regarding pest control, contact species expert Ellen Ripley.

Okay cool cool cool cool but what is it actually because I am 👌🏽 this close

Read more about M. noxhydria here, or purchase you own specimen here.

The gentleman still has not replied to my email--sadly I may never know if he was attempting to troll me, or if his son was trolling him.

WHAT

I LIVE IN AZ WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THW FUXK I SWEFA TO GOD I BETTER NOT SEE TAHT SHIT ANYWHERE NEAR ME OH MY GOS IM GONNA HAVE A FUCKIFNG AMXIETY ATTACK OBE RTHIS I DONT LIKE THAT ONE BIT

I’m guessing you haven’t clicked any of the links, but let me recommend this highly-regraded documentary on the creatures, featuring hands-on zoology by Ellen Ripley, which is just under two hours long and can be watched here. It should reassure you.

Ship, I am severely arachnophobic and afraid to look at this, but I live in AZ and feel like this is information I might need. You don’t happen to know where I could find picture-free info, do you?

I think the Google Cache version of the first link will load image-free, but if you click the links it takes you to other parts of the fandom wiki where they will load normally. You literally have nothing to worry about.

Beauty and the beast

You know what I think is really cool about language (English in this case)? It’s the way you can express “I don’t know” without opening your mouth. All you have to do is hum a low note, a high note, then another lower note. The same goes for yes and no. Does anyone know what this is called?

image

These are called vocables, a form of non-lexical utterance - that is, wordlike sounds that aren’t strictly words, have flexible meaning depending on context, and reflect the speakers emotional reaction to the context rather than stating something specific. They also include uh-oh! (that’s not good!), uh-huh and mm-hmm (yes), uhn-uhn (no), huh? (what?), huh… (oh, I see…), hmmn… (I wonder… / maybe…), awww! (that’s cute!), aww… (darn it…), um? (excuse me; that doesn’t seem right?), ugh and guh (expressions of alarm, disgust, or sympathy toward somebody else’s displeasure or distress), etc.

Every natural human language has at least a few vocables in it, and filler words like “um” and “erm” are also part of this overall class of utterances. Technically “vocable” itself refers to a wider category of utterances, but these types of sounds are the ones most frequently being referred to, when the word is used.

Reblog if u just hummed all of these out loud as you read them
