Are you going to any protests?

Hi everyone,

Mod Lesya here.

On May 27th, 2020, police were called on Regis Korchinski-Paquet to take her to the mental health hospital for treatment. Instead of receiving care, she was pushed off the balcony by police. The police are calling it “unfounded allegations” and have claimed her death as a suicide.

image

News about her death isn’t widespread, and the police coverup has been swift. There is a long racist history with Toronto police, and they are a notoriously corrupt police force even among police forces.

The story is: while her mother and brother waited in the hall, police entered the apartment. Her family heard her cry for help, silence, then police returning saying she fell to her death.

Canada has had sporadic protests in response, but I do not want her death to be downplayed by the situation in America. This is an international issue of police violence.

A History of Police Deaths in Canada

Police are just as corrupt, just as racist, and just as terrible in Canada as they are in America. This is being tagged as Black Lives Matter because it is primarily about Regis, and this section is to detail how her death is not an isolated incident of racialized violence by police.

Black and Indigenous people have been killed in Canada en masse either by police, or their deaths at the hands of others have been ignored by police.

Toronto had a homophobic serial killer targeting black and brown men that was ignored by police for years.

Some high profile racialized deaths across Canada (primarily Indigenous and black immigrants)

Colton Boushie’s killer was allowed to walk free

While this isn’t specifically to Black lives, it shows that Canada’s justice system is not better than America’s.

Protests

As far as I’m aware, most protests remained peaceful, and no violence has erupted. The protests are taking the form of vigils, primarily. Protests are also scheduled at later dates.

Montreal protests turned violent on June 1st at 8 pm, after 3 hours of peace, when police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd. This protest is specifically being reported as one for George Floyd.

Violence in Canada has remained minimal, but most people are not aware of the death. Canada is beginning to spark in protests in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

imageimageimageimage Police officer left out key facts in obtaining indictment of Breonna Taylor's boyfriend A Louisville Police sergeant who secured an indictment against Kenneth Walker for attempted murder failed to give the grand jury key informa Louisville Courier Journal

#JusticeForBreonnaTaylor

The police officers were at the wrong home, in the middle of the night, serving a no-knock warrant thinking they would find drugs at the residence (which they did not, as neither Kenneth nor Breonna were drug dealers, nor was their home a trap house). Kenneth was frightened and thought the house was being broken into, and he fired one shot thinking he was defending the lives of his girlfriend and himself. Breonna was then shot EIGHT times and passed away.

He was charged with the attempted murder murder of a police officer and assault, despite not knowing at the time that those were officers, not burglars breaking in (they were plain-clothed, and Breonna and Kenneth were innocent of any crime, so how would he know), and a police sergeant intentionally omitted that information in front of the grand jury. The sergeant also did not mention that Breonna was killed by police at the scene when they shot at the pair, in fact - she didn't even mention her existence, and her testimony played a crucial role in the grand jury choosing to charge Kenneth with what they did. Sergeant Amanda Seelye misled them severely.

Seelye also told the grand jury that officers knocked, repeatedly announced themselves and then procceeded to break the door open and were immediately met by gunfire, which has been disputed by SIX WITNESSES that say there was no knocking or announcing. The mentioned "gunfire" was a single bullet.

Justice for Kenneth Walker organized by Kenicia Walker https://www.standwithbre.com/ We are raising money on behalf of our loved one Kenneth Walker… Kenicia Walker needs your support for Justice gofundme.com

The attempted murder charge has been dropped I believe, still no where near good enough but it's a start.

Now the real culprits need to be charged over Breonna's MURDER and everything else they did to her and Kenneth.

I always wondered about this room. Where is it?

the fact that there's an 8 fucking pm curfew in new york is so unfathomably insane to me. like, a city of 8 million or whatever all has to go home when the sun is barely down because cops are that addicted to upholding white supremacy? i was out and some cop drove by and said thru his loudspeaker "go home! what are you still doing out!" what are you doing driving around in a caravan with your lights on fucking harassing people in the street? get a real fucking job

listen living in nyc is wild right now, but the curfew makes total sense when you see it from the NYPD’s perspective.

i was out today 4-7pm, cops surrounding us marching with full riot gear, batons, shields, tasers, the works, and following the march were at least 15 NYPD vans. i kept wondering, what are they waiting for??

they were waiting for the FUCKING CURFEW. as soon as 8pm hits, everyone--EVERYONE--on the street is a criminal, because you’re out past curfew. if you’re out after 8pm, you’re breaking the law. you’re a criminal,  and if you’re a criminal, the cops can do anything to you that they want. it is literally night and day. i left today’s march before the curfew, with zero violence from police, but as soon as night fell, suddenly those very same cops got out their batons and tripped up everyone they could find.

the curfew exists SOLELY to give the NYPD a cover for arrests, beatings, stealing people’s bicycles, paper spray, tear gas, any of the violent things those motherfuckers fantasize about doing every single hour of the day.

and when you see people argue, “oh if they didn’t want to be arrested, they shouldn’t have been out past curfew” THAT’S THE FUCKING POINT. it’s a state-sanctioned crack down on otherwise free speech and assembly. they WANT to trap people into “committing” “crimes” so they can be violent. they WANT to beat and maim all the peaceful protesters doing the day, and without a curfew, they wouldn’t have as many good excuses for doing so.

the curfew is only so that the police can commit violence against peaceful, first-amendment protected citizens and scare everyone else into staying inside. it’s a goddamn shame and i will go to my grave ashamed of myself for ever thinking cops are good people.

They beat a couple of black folk who weren’t even part of the protests and were driving back home simply because it was after 8 PM.

John Boyega at Hyde Park demonstration #BlackLivesMattter

[Transcript]

[Boyega]: I want to thank every single one of you for coming out. This is very important—this is very vital. Black lives have always mattered! We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless, and now is the time. I ain’t waiting! I ain’t waiting! I have been born in this country, I’m 28 years old, born and raised in London, I’ve grown tired—every black person understands and realizes the first time you are reminded that you are black. You remember, every black person in here remembers, when another person reminded you that you are black. So none of you out there, all those protestors on the other side protesting against what we want to do, protesting against what we want to try and achieve, [?] you, because this is so vital.

[Other voices, to crowd]: Sit down! Sit down!

[Boyega]: Sit down, guys, we have to sit down. If you could sit down, if you can sit down. Now I need you guys to understand, I need you to understand now how painful this shit is! I need you to understand how painful it is to be reminded every day that your race means nothing! And that isn’t the case anymore. That is never the case anymore. We are going to try today—we are a physical representation of our support for George Floyd.

[Crowd cheers]

[Boyega]: We are a physical representation of our support for Sandra Bland! We are a physical representation of our support for Trayvon Martin! We are a physical representation of our support for Stephen Lawrence! For Mark Duggan! It is very, very important that we keep control of this moment and we make this as peaceful as possible. We make this as peaceful and as organized as possible. Because you know what, guys, they want us to mess up. They want us to be disorganized. But not today! Not today!

[Other voices]: Not today!

[Boyega]: Not today! And now this message is specifically for black men. Black men, we—[Boyega cuts off, crying and bending over from emotion]

[Crowd]: Speak! Speak!

[Other voices]: You can do this, you’ve got this.

[Boyega]: Black men, black men, we need to take care of our black women. We need to take care of them! They are our hearts! They are our hearts, they are our future, we cannot demonize our own. We are the pillars of the family. Imagine this, a nation that is set up with individual families that are thriving, that are healthy, that communicate, that raise their children in love, have a better rate of becoming better human beings, and that’s what we need to create. Black men, it starts with you, and it’s done, man—we can’t be trash no more. We have to be better.

You don’t understand, I’m speaking to you from the heart. Look, I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this. But fuck that--[words bleeped out]. This, today, is about innocent people who were halfway through their process. We don’t know what George Floyd could have achieved; we don’t know what Sandra Bland could have achieved. But today we’re going to make sure that that won’t be an alien thought to our young ones. I’m sure you lot came today, you left your kids, and when you see your kids there aimlessly playing, they don’t understand what’s going on. Today is the day that we remind them that we are dedicated, and this is a lifelong dedication. Guys, we don’t leave here and stop, you know. We don’t leave here and stop. This is longevity. Some of you are artists, some of you are bankers, some of you are lawyers, some of you own shops, stores. You are important. Your individual power, your individual right, is very, very important. We can all join together to make this a better world. We can all join together to make this special. We can all join together!

Joan of Arc

I mean you’re mostly right. But she looked like this

image

She didn’t but thank you for the input!

Joan of arc is a very popular figure in media so her image is subject to a lot of bending. Sometimes it’s very subtle, and other times it’s very apparent. There’s no official pictures or paintings of her that survived from her time, but there are several trial transcripts that describe her, as well as first hand reports and letters from those who worked beside her that do the same.

The general consensus within these that I found on her appearance was that Joan was pretty short and stocky. Her eyes were far apart, and somewhat large, her hair was black/dark brown and close cut, and she had a fairly common looking face. Multiple people report that she had a red birthmark behind her left ear and a low but sweet voice. A surprising amount is written about her physical strength despite her small stature. I would suggest you read De Boulainvilliers’ (Chamberlain to Charles VII) letters, among others. He knew her first hand and goes into a lot of depth about her appearance and aura.

A big part of her rebranding is making her seem older, more feminine, paler, and blonder. Due to color/racism as well as light representing purity, renditions of her make her whiter (she was a poor farmer from mid/south France which means she was on the darker side of white complexions) to show holiness. People also make her more feminine due to stigma against women who “don’t look like women” and to lean into her Virgin Mary esk aura.

imageimage

(Here’s two paintings I found that more accurately represent her image)

white australian here. I don’t have anything to recommend as far as hands-on advocacy goes, as it’s not something I’m often able to do. what I have been doing today is trying to find local orgs that assist indigenous australians, especially legal assistance.

here are the groups I’m donating to. some of them are covid-19 fundraisers, some are legal services. some are victoria-focused so I’d encourage other australians reading this to look for local organisations to support!

Victorian Aboriginal Legal Servicehttps://vals.org.au/ Federation of Community Legal Centreshttps://www.fclc.org.au/ ANTaR’s Close the Gap Campaignhttps://antar.org.au/ Barpirdhila's fundraiser for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander artists & community affected by COVID-19https://covid19-first-nations-community-impacts.raisely.com The Malpa Project's fundraiser for community health education & resources to combat COVID-19https://chuffed.org/project/help-aboriginal-kids-fight-covid-19/

if you’re able to donate, please do. if you’re able to boost the voices of indigenous people and activists, please do.

I’ve been trying to find orgs taking donations specifically to fight against indigenous deaths in custody. haven’t found anything yet (I’m probably not using good search terms), so if anyone’s got suggestions please let me know/add them in a reblog!

idk if they take donations directly but the WAR Collective has organised some BLM rallies (Melb and Bne I think) for next week, and they might release donation info in the next few days?

Hi everyone,

Mod Colette here of WritingwithColor. I live in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Just when you thought coronavirus was enough…

SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM ON HOW TO DONATE & HELP

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by police in my city.

image

He was a 46-year old Black man, handcuffed, unarmed and complying. White police officer, Derek Chauvin, murdered Mr. Floyd.

EX officer Chauvin was arrested on May 29, 2020. He’s been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. There’s no charges yet against his accomplices, the 3 other officers that held Floyd down while Chauvin kept his knee on his neck for 9 minutes. They ignored his pleas, and the pleas from onlookers begging Chauvin to stop.

“I can’t breathe.”

“They’re gonna kill me.”

“Mama!”

“Please—”

The Protests

There are several protests every day. Those who oppose us have run over protesters, including a semi truck. A Black Latino CNN reporter was arrested, even though he identified himself; his white co-worker not too far away was not arrested after he identified himself. This is a small sample; the incidents are endless.

Police reacted to peaceful marching with tear-gas and rubber bullets. This is in strong contrast to their reaction the other week, when heavily armed white people came to protest the covid-19 lockdown.

imageimage

Opportunists have taken advantage of the crowds to loot, destroy, and cause chaos.

This behavior is a consequence of robbing Black people of their lives. Society has been enslaving, assaulting, robbing, oppressing, and killing Black people for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Property is not as important as people. People cannot be replaced.

On the other hand, this has moved far beyond looting and tagging stores.

image

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said “We are now confronting white supremacists, members of organized crime, out of state instigators, and possibly even foreign actors to destroy and destabilize our city and our region.”

It is true and is confirmed. Groups of majority white people are strategically burning down PoC-owned businesses, libraries, groceries in food deserts, pharmacies. They’re attempting to burn apartment complexes and homes.

These people are not a part of the movement.

I am not sleeping. I am watching. Watching my fellow Minnesotans protest, get tear-gassed, and keep getting back up to scream out George’s name.

I’m watching my community get together every day to rebuild, clean, and feed those in need. And then every night, guarding our streets from people who, again, don’t live here and do not care about George Floyd or justice.

As a Black woman in America, i’m scared. And I am not sleeping.

Please stay awake with me, with us, and help.

-Mod Colette, WWC

Remember that movie in which Jack Black was a teacher and building a rock band and when a little black chubby girl asked to be a singer he only said “sure! let me hear you” and the moment she started using her beautiful voice his lit up like all of his dreams came true, PLUS the same little girl was scared that people would make fun of her because she was fat and he started listing awesome singers with some weight on and included himself and told her that people wouldn’t laugh because she is awesome at what she does and that is all that matters PLUS that it’s ok to enjoy food?

Also, when a little boy asked to be the band’s stylist he just said “sure, go ahead fancy pants” like, there wasn’t a single second of questioning it, he went into “ok, that will be your position then” right away

That fucking movie is an hour and a half of Jack Black teaching kids to love themselves disregarding all of the stereotypes

And don’t forget the Asian guy said he shouldn’t be in the band because he thought he wasn’t “cool enough”. Jack Black didn’t miss a beat by making up a secret handshake between he and the kid.and telling him he’s amazing at what he does playing the piano. After that the Asian kid even stood up for himself against a bully.

And he put the violent kid with anger issues on drums and let him constructively work out his aggression.

School of Rock is fab basically

School of Rock was and still is iconic

And Jack Black says it’s the thing he’s most proud of making 🥺

people who can just plop their sweet lil heads down on their pillow and quickly fall asleep don’t know how lucky they are… i gotta construct a whole ass cinematic universe in my head with dramatic plot twists and in-depth characters to help me fall asleep

I was genuinely stunned when I realised not everyone told themselves elaborate internal bedtime stories every night without fail, inclusive of occasionally having to get back up out of bed to figure out a blocking issue in the mental scene that’s fucking up your ability to concerntrate on the narrative. It’s honestly only in the last few years that I’ve realised the amount of time I spend in various paracosms is not necessarily that normal, and for the life of me I cannot figure out what the fuck people who don’t do this spend their time thinking about?

My mum says she just thinks about real world stuff? All the time? Like jobs she has to do and the like?

I can remember lying in bed when I couldn’t have been any older than six mentally constructing self-insert Lord of the Rings AUs, I reckon a solid 90% of my waking life is spent with at least a background noise of some fictional scenario running through my mind, and I just find it completely fascinating how different people’s brains work because it had genuinely never occurred to me that that wasn’t just How Humans Functioned.

Brains are weird. Also I still can’t figure out what I’d do with all that time and brainspace, I can’t comprehend it at all.

Oh yes and mine lasts for weeks. When I do fall asleep it’s like a “To Be Continued” and then the next night it starts “Previously on”

I actually taught myself to do this when I decided I wanted to write.

a person: i’m autistic. i don’t have a professional diagnosis.

a neurotypical: you can’t! self diagnose! autism!!! onLy a dOctor can do that!!!

most doctors: don’t know what autism looks like in people other than nonverbal white cis boys

most doctors: recommend abusive therapies for autistic kids and teens

most doctors who specialize in diagnosing autism: refuse to evaluate adults

an autism evaluation for a minor teen who wants one: requires having supportive parents who understand that autism is not a tragedy and looks different for every autistic person, and that many autistic people can talk, have friends, do okay in school, and otherwise fake looking neurotypical

an autism evaluation for an adult: very expensive and often not covered by insurance in the U.S., also extremely difficult to get in France

an on-record autism diagnosis: can be used to deny you custody of children, to have your kids taken away, to forcibly institutionalize you

autism advocacy orgs that actually help autistic ppl like ASAN, AWN, AANE: Here are some resources for figuring out if you could be autistic. Professional diagnosis is a very personal decision and is not required for knowing that you’re one of us. We support you as an autistic person even if you don’t have a paper diagnosis.

a sincere autism self diagnosis: harms no one even if it’s incorrect, enables the person to feel part of a community of people with similar issues and learn more about autism, a gateway to learning about autism acceptance movements, often the first step toward self acceptance and self esteem

This post is really helpful!

you can get clear plastic rubber spacers to put in your piercings if youre worried about them closing. stage makeup is made to be completely opaque and sweat proof consider using this for covering up tattoos, concealer is not opaque enough. leave your id and wallet at home, bring a change pouch for cash. write important numbers on your arms and legs. dont just turn your location off turn your whole phone off with the battery and sim card out, only turn it on unless you need too (if you have an iphone keep it at home and get a contact/safety buddy). pin your house keys, change pouch or anything small and important on the inside of your pants or the inside of pockets to prevent losses during physical altercations. double up on socks they become pockets, and are great if you cant leave your debit/credit card at home.

to truly protect you identity you need to cover your hair, get dark sunglasses, a mask that covers around your face, a bandana and the masks we us to stop covid frm spreading show too much skin, which is really important for black and brown folks to cover, all black gloves, black shirt/jacket and pants. tuck your pants legs into your shoes or socks to help prevent them getting caught on things or pulled off.skip oil based lotions and hair care products bc tear gas binds to oils, it also binds to many other things like clothes so dressing in layers or having backup clothes in a black backpack help, also keep plastic bags incase u need to change out of your gassed clothes and dont wanna keep them in your bag.

stay safe! stay organizing!

Be careful about where you write a phone number. Fox News zoomed in on a protester’s arm one time so that their viewers could call and harass the emergency contact person
