no one: spiderman: ok so maybe i dated moon knight?? just a little?

the first time i heard someone call mcu spidey a white-washed version of miles i thought it was a fair, if exaggerated, way of criticizing the many plot points sm:hoco took from miles's story. but the more i think about it.... is there anything about mcu peter parker that isn't just miles's story? he doesn't have his photography, jewish identity/themes, relationship with aunt may, grief over ben's death, desire to help people, poverty, loyalty to his city, his independence....

in hoco: he has a middle class background, an acadec team, a young parent, a chubby + nerdy best friend asian/pacific islander background....

it's become very clear to me that the mcu was interested in making a spider-man movie, but-- as has been said --they didn't want to re-hash the same story over again. so what did they do?

they didn't make a movie about peter parker is for sure. but they didn't make a movie about miles morales either-- miles is inseparable from his culture and background. so they went the safe route, and took EVERYTHING from miles' story and pasted them onto a character who just.... isn't anyone. his personality starts and ends with being the main character.

this works for an audience who are ready to accept him as a blank slate, an everyman, just there to take them through the story. they don't seem to mind his lack of everything.

and i just find that really fucking upsetting.

Not trying to be a hipster or anything but I loved Dolly Parton when she was considered totally uncool. I’m glad she is having an upswing in popularity because she deserves to be recognized for the genius that she is. But you don’t have to make her “cool” in order to justify loving her music. Dolly is one of the most gifted songwriters of all time. And as @if-only-angels-could-prevail said she is dismissed so often because she is a woman and a country music artist and she has a glamorous image.

If half the people who claim to hate country but love Dolly opened their minds, they would discover many other female country artists who explore similar subject matter. Loretta Lynn, Bobbie Gentry, Dixie Chicks, Chely Wright and many other women in country discuss themes of feminism, poverty, mental illness, domestic violence, and countless other subjects that pop and rock artists were often too afraid to touch. Yet they get dismissed because country is seen as hokey and stupid.

The truth is there are lots of amazing bands and musicians that are seen as uncool, lame, square, however you want to put it. And if you open yourself up to them you could discover some amazing music. Stop being afraid to embrace earnesty. You don’t have to like an artist ironically or because they have a kitschy aesthetic, you can just like them because the music moves you or speaks to you in some way.

Full offense, Monica Rambeau deserved to be the cinematic Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers. When neither the original male CM, nor the original Danvers run took off, Roger Stern created Monica Rambeau. She held the title of Captain Marvel for 13 years. She led the Avengers.

image

Stern was fired for objecting to plots that undermined or degraded Rambeau. And Marvel has been trying to sideline her ever since. She made 446 appearances across various stories, but they never gave her a series. They re-named her half a dozen times. They de-powered her. They trashed her leadership, but continually employed her as “support” for other heroes. And still, with her every iteration, she held the readership and remained popular. Some would say more popular than Danvers. So, they wrote an astoundingly gross storyline that negated all their half-hearted attempts at showing the two women as friends and equals. They managed to literally illustrate white feminism in a single page, as Carol absorbs Monica like a power-up.

image

Marvel never wanted her. But we did. Monica Rambeau was as overpowered and complex as any of her white male (and female) counterparts, and readers loved her. Marvel just couldn’t have that, or couldn’t believe in it. Maybe that’s to do with the critical lack of diversity among their writing staff.

With Danvers as its hero, the forthcoming Captain Marvel movie will erase Monica’s legacy. It’s less about headlining a female superhero in the MCU, and more about Marvel finally getting what they wanted. But, they’re not getting it from me.
